Mission:

The mission of KALA-FM is to provide a broadcast quality learning lab for St. Ambrose University’s communication students and to serve the Quad Cities community with diverse music, news, and information.

Diversity Statement:

KALA-FM adheres to the St. Ambrose University policies on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, detailed below.

Above all, St. Ambrose University as a Catholic institution believes in the inherent God-given dignity and worth of every individual.

As stated in our Mission and Core Values, we affirm that St. Ambrose University seeks to enable all of its students to develop intellectually, spiritually, ethically, socially, artistically, and physically to enrich their own lives and the lives of others.

Core Value of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
St. Ambrose University commits to ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion as core priorities as demonstrated by the intentional design of policies, procedures, resource allocations, and practices that respect the God-given dignity and worth of every individual in pursuit of social justice. Inspired by Catholic social teaching, we resolve to foster an environment designed to dismantle all discrimination, whether based on sex, gender identity, sexuality, race, ethnicity, color, ability, language, religion, or socioeconomic status.

Definitions and Commitments
Diversity is a feature of God’s creation and enriches the lives of our communities and world. To honor this diversity, we seek understanding and strive to respect the unique differences of each individual. We commit to creating a campus culture willing to explore and respect the multiplicity of identities, perspectives, and beliefs in our evolving, diverse world.

An Equity framework acknowledges the historical and persistent barriers that certain individuals face and offers them what they need to succeed and thrive. We acknowledge and remain unapologetically responsive to the numerous ways in which social or cultural injustice impede or propel student and employee success. To ensure personal and institutional accountability, we commit to actively pursue initiatives that further social justice causes on campus and in society.

Inclusion is achieved when every individual feels a sense of belonging. To this end, St. Ambrose students, employees, and service partners commit to a campus community where diverse perspectives and populations are welcomed and honored.

Diversity Goals:

St. Ambrose University, including KALA, is working on its strategic plan in regards to hiring, retention, training, development and assessment. Because of this plan, the university has expanded its recruitment efforts by becoming a member of the Central Midwest Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), and Minorities and Success, along with many other diverse posting sites that assist St. Ambrose University to attract, recruit, hire and retain a diverse workforce.

The university has expanded its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) training for supervisors as well as to the entire campus community, including staff of KALA.  The St. Ambrose University Board of Trustees, KALA’s governing body, updated the university’s Diversity Statement on April 9, 2021, from the original created in 2005.  SAU has added Affinity groups to campus to promote a more inclusive environment. In October 2021, the Governance Committee will discuss a plan to utilize additional avenues to recruit new members with diverse backgrounds.

KALA strives to have a staff and community advisory board that reflects the diverse population it serves. Additionally, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s (CPB) Diversity Eligibility Criteria require public media organizations to adopt formal goals for diversity and report annually on steps taken toward those goals. These actions are required for all stations receiving Community Service Grant (CSG) funds, including KALA.

KALA’s diversity goals:

  • Recruit and retain diverse volunteers, staff, and community advisory board members representative of the Quad Cities area.
  • Provide equal opportunity in employment.
  • Educate staff through annual Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training.
  • Encourage minority student workers, interns, and volunteers to apply for opportunities with KALA.
  • Review these goals and issue a status report annually.

In addition, KALA will undertake one of the following initiatives on an annual basis:

  • Include individuals representing diverse groups in student employment, internship or volunteer programs designed to provide meaningful professional level experience in order to reflect the diversity of the communities they serve and further public broadcasting’s commitment to education;
  • Recruit diverse candidates to serve on KALA’s community advisory board;
  • Participate in minority or other diversity job fairs; or
  • Implement formal diversity training programs for appropriate staff and volunteers.

You can find KALA’s annual Diversity report here.

Governing Body:

KALA-FM is governed by the St. Ambrose University Board of Trustees. A list of the current Board of Trustees can be found, here, on the St. Ambrose University website.

As a private university, the St. Ambrose University Board of Trustees does not hold public meetings. Station management shares pertinent information related to the operation of KALA with senior management to ensure that the opportunity exists for the Board of Trustees to understand the current and future planned operation of the station.
