SAU Communication students finalists for 2020 IBS awards

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KALA) – Three St. Ambrose students are being recognized for their hard work in broadcasting.

Seniors Sharon Adasme and Brad Burton, and sophomore Logan Howell are finalists for awards from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System. Every year, the organization recognizes high school and college students producing exceptional work in audio and television categories. Student-aired content from 2019 was eligible for submission. Thousands of schools submit entries each year.

Adasme is a finalist in the category “Best Newscast” for her Nov. 5, 2019, radio newscast, “KALA News Today,” which featured coverage of Davenport’s mayoral race. The twice-weekly show aired at 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays on KALA 88.5 FM during the fall semester of the 2019-2020 school year.

Burton and Howell are finalists in the category “Best Sports Interview” for their conversation with guest John Cloghessy on their weekly sports talk show “Unsportsmanlike Conduct.” Cloghessy, who is a graduate of St. Ambrose University, spoke about his time in sports broadcasting, including a stint as a play-by-play host for Hawkeye Football. “Unsportsmanlike Conduct” airs on KALA HD-2 106.1 FM every Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

KALA Operations Manager David Baker oversees the work students produce on a day-to-day basis and excited to see their work recognized.

“We are exceptionally proud of all of our students who work in our digital media production outlets,” Baker said. “The nominated students have been recognized at a national level, which says a great deal about the quality of their work.”

The last St. Ambrose student to be an IBS award finalist was Mitchell Widmeier in 2015.

The IBS will announce this year’s winners at its 2020 conference in March.

Welcome to our new website!

Hello, and welcome to KALA 88.5FM’s brand new website!

Over the summer, the staff at KALA worked to develop a space where you can find everything you need to connect with, contact, and listen to KALA radio.

KALA is a public radio station operating out of the Galvin Fine Arts Center on the campus of St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. KALA began broadcasting in 1969. Since then, the station expanded with a second frequency on 106.1FM, hosted numerous live sports and news events, and been proud sponsors of diversity events throughout the Quad Cities.

Over the summer we hosted an open house to celebrate 50 years of KALA, participated and were a sponsor of The Bill Bell Jazz and Heritage Festival, were a sponsor of the Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival, walked in the East Moline 4th of July parade, and partnered with Mercado on Fifth to promote the weekly open-air market. We hope you find our website to be helpful, informative, and engaging.
